Terms & conditions

An agreement nobody reads is worth nothing, so this one is written to be read. The summaries are for skimming; the paragraphs are what binds.

Updated 21 September 2026

1. Accepting these terms

In short

Using the app means agreeing to this. You must be 13 or over.

By downloading, installing or using Koshac, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app, and delete it. These terms are an agreement between you and us, and they are also the end-user licence for the app.

You must be at least 13 years old to use Koshac. If you are agreeing on behalf of somebody else, you confirm you are entitled to bind them.

2. What the words mean

TermMeaning
the app, KoshacThe Koshac mobile application for iOS and Android, and the servers it talks to.
we, us, ourThe individual developer who builds, publishes and operates Koshac, based in India and reachable at support@koshac.com. Koshac is run by one person, not by a company.
youThe person using the app.
your contentEverything you put into the app: transactions, notes, category and tag names, account and bill labels, group names, profile photo, and details you enter about other people.
a groupA shared space in the app where two or more people record expenses split between them.
a draft transactionA transaction the app proposes from a bank message, which does nothing until you approve it.
a settlementA record in the app that somebody says a payment was made. It is a note about the real world, not a payment.

3. What Koshac is

Koshac is a personal finance app that records money you have already spent or received. It lets you categorise transactions, hold accounts and bills, set budgets, split expenses with other people, see trends, and sync all of that across your own devices.

It is licensed for your personal, non-commercial use. Everything it shows you is a summary of what you or your group put into it.

4. What Koshac is not

In short

Not a bank, not a payment app, not financial advice.

  • Not a bank or payment service. Koshac cannot move money. It does not connect to your bank, hold funds, or make a transfer. Settling up inside a group records that a payment happened; it does not make one happen.
  • Not financial, investment, tax or legal advice. Nothing in the app is a recommendation. Decisions you make after looking at it are yours.
  • Not an accounting system. Do not use it as your books of account or as the basis of a tax filing.
  • Not a legal record of debt. A group balance is a shared note between friends, not an enforceable instrument.

5. Your licence to use it

In short

A personal licence to use the app on devices you control, for as long as you follow these terms.

We grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable and revocable licence to install and use the app on mobile devices that you own or control, for your own non-commercial use. That is a licence, not a sale: we keep ownership of the app itself, as set out in section 15.

Under that licence you may not:

  • Copy, redistribute, sell, rent, lease, sublicense or lend the app.
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble it, or try to derive its source code, except to the extent a law gives you that right regardless of this clause.
  • Remove or obscure any copyright, trade mark or other proprietary notice.
  • Modify the app or build a derivative work from it.
  • Use it to build a competing product, or to train a machine-learning model.

The licence ends automatically if you stop complying with these terms, or when you delete your account. Nothing here limits any right you have under mandatory consumer or competition law.

6. App stores

In short

You also agree to your app store's rules. Apple and Google supply the app; they do not run it, and your dispute is with us.

You get Koshac from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and your use is also subject to that store's own terms, including the App Store Terms of Service and Usage Rules, or the Google Play Terms of Service. Where those rules are stricter than these terms, those rules apply to that copy of the app.

If you got the app from the Apple App Store

Apple requires the following, and we agree to it:

  • These terms are between you and us only, not with Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for Koshac and its contents.
  • Your licence is limited to using Koshac on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Usage Rules, except that it may also be accessed by other accounts associated with you through Family Sharing or volume purchasing.
  • Maintenance and support are ours alone. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for Koshac.
  • If Koshac fails to conform to any warranty that applies to it, you may tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price. Koshac is free, so that refund is nil. To the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation at all, and any other claim about the app is ours to answer.
  • Product claims are ours, not Apple's. That includes product liability, any failure to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection or privacy law.
  • If a third party claims Koshac infringes their intellectual property, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.
  • You confirm you are not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a terrorist-supporting country, and that you are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and on your acceptance Apple has the right to enforce them against you.
  • Questions, complaints and claims about Koshac go to support@koshac.com, and to the address in section 24.

If you got the app from Google Play

Google supplies the app under the Google Play Terms of Service. Google is not a party to these terms, is not responsible for Koshac, and does not provide support for it. Your dealings with us are ours to answer for.

7. Your account

You sign in with a phone number and a one-time code, or with a Google or Apple account. You are responsible for keeping access to that phone number and that Google or Apple account secure, and for anyone who uses the app on an unlocked device of yours.

Give us accurate information, and keep it current. One person, one account: do not share your account, and do not create one in somebody else's name.

Tell us at support@koshac.com if you think somebody else has got into your account. The app also offers a PIN and biometric lock, which we recommend turning on.

8. What you agree not to do

  • Use the app for anything unlawful, or to launder, disguise or track the proceeds of anything unlawful.
  • Add another person to a group in order to harass them, or to fabricate a debt they do not owe.
  • Impersonate anybody, or misrepresent who you are.
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile or tamper with the app, or attempt to reach parts of the service you are not authorised to reach.
  • Automate, scrape or load-test the service, or interfere with anybody else's use of it.
  • Probe or bypass any security or rate limit, or use the app to attack anything else.
  • Upload anything malicious, or a profile photo you have no right to use.
  • Collect other users' personal information out of the app for any purpose of your own.

If you find a security flaw, please tell us at support@koshac.com before telling anyone else. We will not pursue you for a good-faith report.

9. Your content, and other people

In short

Your content stays yours. We only get the permission we need to run the app for you. What you enter about other people is your responsibility.

You keep ownership of your content. You grant us a worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, back up, transmit and display it, strictly so that we can operate the app for you and show your shared entries to the members of the groups you chose. That licence exists to run the service and nothing else: we do not use your content for advertising, do not sell it, do not publish it, and do not train machine-learning models on it. It ends when you delete the content or your account, subject to the backup window in the privacy policy.

Data about other people is your responsibility. When you add somebody to a group, or enter a name and phone number for a person who does not use Koshac, you are putting their information into the app. You confirm that you are entitled to do so and that you will use it only to run that group. If they ask you to remove them, remove them.

We do not review your content, and we are not obliged to. We may remove content or suspend a group where we reasonably believe it breaks these terms or the law, or where somebody credibly tells us they were added to harass them. Where it is reasonable and lawful to do so, we will tell you first.

10. Accuracy of the numbers

In short

Check the drafts. Automatic capture is a convenience, not an auditor.

Koshac calculates from what it is given. If a transaction is entered wrongly, every total containing it will be wrong too, and that is not a defect in the app.

Where the app reads a bank message and proposes a draft transaction, it is making a best-effort guess from unstructured text written by your bank. It can misread an amount, pick the wrong merchant, miss a message entirely or duplicate one. That is exactly why drafts wait for you to approve them, and you are responsible for checking one before you do.

Currency conversion uses rates fetched from two public services, Frankfurter and ExchangeRate-API's open endpoint, which we do not operate and cannot guarantee. A rate is indicative, not a dealing rate: it will not match what your bank or card issuer actually charged you, which includes their own margin and fees. If a rate cannot be fetched the app falls back to a cached one, or to 1:1 where it has nothing cached, so check a converted figure before relying on it. The privacy policy says what those services receive.

On iOS, message capture depends on a Shortcuts automation that you build and control. We do not operate it, cannot see whether it is running, and are not responsible for messages it does not deliver.

11. Groups and money between people

When you create or join a group, the expenses, splits, balances and settlements in it are visible to every member, along with your display name and photo. Adding someone to a group makes your shared entries visible to them.

Any dispute about who owes what is between the members of that group. We provide the arithmetic; we are not a party to the debt, an arbitrator of it, or an escrow for it. A settlement recorded in the app is a claim by one member that a payment was made outside it.

Because a balance has two sides, some shared records survive one member deleting their account. The deletion page says exactly which, and why.

12. Privacy

How we handle your data is set out in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms. In short: your bank messages are parsed on your phone and never reach us, your contacts' names never leave your phone and only the numbers of the people you pick are checked against our account list without being kept, we sell nothing to anybody, and you can delete your account from inside the app at any time.

13. Availability and changes

We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the app, and we may add or remove features. We will not knowingly remove your ability to export or delete your own data. If we discontinue Koshac altogether, we will give you reasonable notice and a way to get your data out first.

Exports. The app can write your transactions and your groups to CSV, and a statement to PDF, and hand the file to whatever you choose to send it to. One thing follows from that. Once you have shared an exported file it is an ordinary unencrypted file in somebody else's app, outside Koshac and outside our control, so treat it the way you would treat a bank statement.

The service depends on the internet, on Google Cloud, on Supabase, which hosts the database, and on your device's operating system. We do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free. The app is designed to keep working offline, and to sync when it can.

14. Price

In short

Free at launch, with no purchases inside it. If that ever changes, we will tell you first, and it will not apply retroactively.

Koshac is free to use at launch. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions and no adverts, so there is nothing to bill, cancel or refund, and no payment details are collected.

We have not decided whether there will ever be a paid tier. If we introduce one, we will give notice inside the app before it takes effect, we will say plainly what stays free, and we will not start charging for something you are already using without telling you. Any paid tier would be sold through your app store, on that store's payment, cancellation and refund rules, and this section would be replaced with the actual terms of it.

15. Ownership

The app - its source code, design, layout, graphics, name and branding - belongs to us and is protected by copyright and trade mark law. Except for the licence in section 5, nothing in these terms transfers any right in it to you.

Your data is yours. Nothing here gives us ownership of the transactions, notes or photos you put into the app. We hold them in order to run the service for you, on the licence in section 9, and you can take them out or delete them at any time.

If you send us a suggestion for the app, we may act on it without owing you anything, and without it becoming confidential. That is not us claiming your ideas; it is us being able to build an obvious improvement without a later argument about who thought of it.

16. Disclaimer of warranties

The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be error-free, that defects will be corrected, that it will be available when you need it, or that its calculations will suit your circumstances.

Nothing here excludes a liability or a warranty that cannot lawfully be excluded.

17. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, nor for loss of profit, revenue, data or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use the app - including financial decisions you made in reliance on what it showed you.

Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or one thousand rupees. While the app is free, that means one thousand rupees.

Nothing in this section limits our liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for anything else that cannot be limited under the law that applies to you.

Keep your own records. Do not let Koshac be the only copy of anything you cannot afford to lose.

18. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify us against claims, damages and reasonable costs arising from your breach of these terms, your misuse of the app, the information you entered about another person, or a dispute between you and another member of a group. We will tell you promptly about any such claim and will not settle it in a way that admits fault on your part without asking you.

19. Ending it

You can stop at any time by deleting your account in the app, which is described here. Uninstalling alone removes the local copy but leaves your account intact.

We may suspend or terminate an account that breaches these terms or abuses the service. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will warn you first and give you a chance to export your data. If we terminate your account without cause, we will give you notice and time to get your data out.

Sections 15 to 18, and sections 20 and 21, survive the end of this agreement.

20. If we disagree

In short

Email us first. We would rather fix it than argue about it. Nothing here takes away your right to go to a consumer forum or a court.

If you have a complaint, email support@koshac.com and set out what happened and what you want. We will reply within 30 days. Most problems are a bug or a misunderstanding and end there.

We do not require you to arbitrate, and we do not ask you to waive a class action. If we cannot resolve it between us, you are free to take it to a consumer forum or a court with jurisdiction. If you are a consumer in India, that includes the consumer commissions under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and nothing in these terms is intended to prevent you from using them.

Complaints about how we handled your personal data have their own route, set out in the privacy policy.

21. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of India have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer law in your country of residence, or of the right to bring proceedings there where that law gives it to you.

Koshac is built and operated by an individual developer in India, not by a company, and "we" throughout this document means that person. There is no separate corporate entity standing behind the app, and we would rather say so than imply one. Contact is by email at support@koshac.com.

22. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms when the app changes or the law does. The date at the top always reflects the current version.

For a minor change we will update this page. For a change that materially affects your rights or obligations, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect and give you a reasonable period to read it. Continuing to use Koshac after that is how you accept the new version; if you would rather not, delete your account, and the old terms govern everything that happened up to that point.

23. The remaining clauses

  • Severability. If a provision is unenforceable, the rest stays in force and that provision is read as narrowly as it needs to be to become valid.
  • No waiver. Not enforcing something once does not mean giving it up.
  • Force majeure. We are not liable for a failure caused by something outside our reasonable control, including network or infrastructure failure, natural disaster, or state action.
  • Third parties. The app relies on your device's operating system, on Google Cloud, on Supabase, on two public exchange-rate services, and on your bank's message formats. We are not responsible for their failures or their changes. Apart from Apple under section 6, nobody who is not a party to these terms may enforce them.
  • Entire agreement. These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between us about the app, and replace anything said before.
  • Assignment. You may not transfer your rights under these terms. We may transfer ours to a successor of the app, and we will tell you if that happens.
  • Language. These terms are written in English. A translation is provided for convenience, and the English version governs.

24. Contact

Questions, complaints and claims about these terms or the app go to support@koshac.com. We answer within 30 days, and usually much sooner.

Email is the contact route for these terms. Koshac is operated by an individual rather than a company, so there is no registered office to publish. The developer's postal address is held by Apple and Google as part of the developer account and is shown on the App Store and Google Play listings; if you need it in writing for a claim, ask at the address above and we will provide it.
